There were 35 submissions in all, 19 of which were from students of the Falmouth High School Graphics Department. There were six finalists, including two high school students. The results were as follows: Winner – Damon & Carrie Crook for “Blue Runner Sky”, Finalist – Damon Crook for “Nobska”, Finalist – Damon Crook for “Red Runner”, Finalist – David Williamson for “#2 Runner”, Finalist – David Williamson for “#3 Nobska”, Finalist – William Brown – Falmouth High School Student, Finalist - Taylor Sparks – Falmouth High School Student. Congratulations.
The Crooks work as scientists for the USDA at the APHIS labs on the Otis base. Damon works as a research entomologist there and Carrie works their as a research assistant. They both do work on invasive insect pests that come into the US from other countries. Both enjoy running and have partaken in the road race in previous years. Damon also ran the Cape Cod marathon in 2005 which finishes off with the same route as the Falmouth road race. Damon and Carrie have lived in North Falmouth for two years before moving to Mashpee last November. Damon does watercolor artwork as a hobby and has a website www.insectartwork.com.
Damon initially did 2 bold designs, one with the Nobska lighthouse and runners behind it. His wife Carrie suggested a more subtle design, making the runners more cloud like, with the lighthouse to the right. This more subtle design appealed to the judges and so Damon wants to give co-credit to his wonderful wife!!
