Printmakers of Cape Cod Fill Important Need.

By David F. Kelley
and Alice Nicholson Galick

The opening of an exhibition by the Printmakers of Cape Cod was held last Sunday at the gallery of the Falmouth Artists Guild
and runs through November 21st. This exhibition shows the
diversity and the possibilities of this genre when artists push the limits between printmaking and painting, collage and digital.
Many pieces incorporate several of these techniques. It is a wonderful collection of work from Cape artists who are devoted to the process and exploration of printmaking.

Printmaking historically has been an important part of most artists activities, but has been seriously reduced in recent years due to increased specialization. This is unfortunate since working in different mediums helps improve an artists ability to visualize and to re-stimulate creativity after specializing too long. It's refreshing to see a whole exhibition of original prints and the Printmakers of Cape Cod through their efforts are filling a big need. Their very existence provides a forum for printmakers, encourages other artists to try these new mediums and through their many exhibitions, provide an exposure to the public of original prints. Both public and artists alike are given the opportunity to expand their knowledge of printmaking and discover an important area for collecting and investing.

This show features the work of 19 printmakers whose 30 pieces present a broad gamat of printmaking techniques. Included are monoprints, woodcuts, intaglio relief prints, etchings, linocuts, serigraphs, collographs, lithographs, color etching and combinations of several of these. So you see, it can be a good eye opening to many visitors used to the more common exhibitions of oil, acrylic, watercolor and pastel paintings.

Some of the work you will see include Mildred Smith's rich studies in color and geometry which show multiple layers of ink and precise registration. Hope Aron Grossman has explored the collograph with found objects inked and embossed into the paper. Joyce Zavorskas'
haunting images of old dolls are incased in encaustic wax to further the illusion of past. Evan Charney shows his mastery of the woodcut in his quiet peaceful scenes and subtle tones of color.

Other artists in the show include: Marcia Goodwin, Alice Nicholson Galick, Muriel Henault Locklin, Jane Lincoln, Mary Brocy Martin, Richard Kochanek, Fracis Hersey, Carol Odell, Thomas Hanley, Marcia Howe, Jack DiBenedetto, Mary Moquin, Sara Ringler and Ron Pokrasso.

The Falmouth Artists Guild gallery is open to the public from 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Friday and is free of charge.
